Xenogenesis 1978 directed by James Cameron on Super 8mm

As a Super 8mm camera expert for hire I thought I’d do a little series of blogposts on the importance of Super 8mm as a format to many of the world’s greatest directors.

One of the greatest sci-fi directors of all time James Cameron actually started his career with a sci-fi showreel shot on (yes you guessed it) – on Super 8mm.

The film called : Xenogenesis was made all the way back in 1978 on the amateur super 8mm format which meant so much to so many directors starting out their career and learning their craft.

Xenogenesis can be seen below in a very low fi copy (probably duped on VHS a couple of times). However, the film is worth watching as it features many themes and motifs which Cameron would carry right through his later career.

Matthew Cooper is a Super 8mm camera expert for hire and is hugely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about all things Super 8mm.  He’s also the director of the rubber reality horror feature film ‘Markham which was released in 2020, his second feature film as director ‘At The Mountains Of Madness’ hit the screen in 2021.
